BIG-SCREEN BUTTER

Jennifer Garner leaves no margarine—er, margin—of error as a butter sculptor in Butter, out October 5. Take a peek behind the scenes.
SCULPTING SCHOOL: For their roles as a butter- carving power couple, Garner and Ty Burrell studied with Jim Victor and Marie Pelton, real-life food-sculpting spouses from Conshohocken, PA.
ELABORATE EDIBLES: Turns out the movie’s intricate sculptures—including a rendering of “The Last Supper”—aren’t entirely unprecedented: A buttery “Last Supper” appeared at the 1999 Iowa State Fair.
CHILLED OUT: Butter sculptures have to be made in custom-built walk-in coolers set to 40°. Victor suggests newbies dress warmly, wear rubber gloves and mind any fallen bits—butter is slippery.
