How could you ever say no to that face?!
Animal shelters across the country are participating in Rachael Ray’s ASPCA $100K Challenge. This cute guy came from the Young Williams Animal Center in Knoxville, TN!
The Challenge is an AMAZING program that is all about getting homeless cats and dogs out of shelters and into loving homes by inviting these shelters to save more lives than ever before. In 2010, the contestants increased lives saved by more than 7,000 in the three-month time frame, and last year’s contestants increased lives saved by almost 9,000!
This year’s Challenge started a little over a month ago and has already saved almost 5,000 lives! That’s a lot of adorable faces.
Rach is a known advocate for animals and a big supporter of animal welfare groups. Did you know that 100 percent of the proceeds from Rach’s pet food, Nutrish, (inspired by her pit bull, Isaboo!) provide funding and support to organizations like the ASPCA? She also loves to home cook meals just for pets! Like Isaboo’s Butternut Squash Mac and Cheddar. See what she has to say about the Challenge.

#CatVidFest 2012 Draws 10,000!

Remember Henri? He’s the somber star of Henri 2, Paw de Deux and several other inventive, thought-provoking and mind-boggingly brilliant cat videos. Well, now he’s not only a moviestar, but a decorated one at that.

Henri

More than 10,000 feline movie buffs gathered together last week at the Walker Art Center’s Open Field in Minneapolis for the first ever Internet Cat Video Festival and bestow the people’s choice award, the Golden Kitty, to Will Braden, creator of Henri 2, Paw de Deux.

Now Henri and his creator are hitting the big time—Animal Planet. The film will be played during the season finale of My Cat From Hell on September 8 at 8 pm.

Braden, a filmmaker from Seattle, makes his living from Henri, or le Chat Noir—there’s an online store dedicated to selling Henri-themed T-shirts, mugs, posters, laptop skins, etc., which makes $1,000 a week!

In addition to the Golden Kitty winner, there were more than 10,000 online nominations submitted from around the world. The categories included comedy, drama, foreign, animated, musical, documentary, art house and more.

Watch the other nominations from the festival, follow Open Field on Twitter @OpenField and check out their Facebook.

Congrats Henri!

Trend Alert: Coming to a Menu Near You!

Fancy comfort food (artisanal jumbo pretzels for the win!) has been popping up on menus lately—and that’s no coincidence! Comfort food is just one of a bunch of interesting trends that are emerging in both food trucks and brick and mortar spots. Here are some of our other favorites:

  • PORK is so hot right now—but really! Bacon is still (and always will be) a major player for foodies, but other pig delicacies, like the mouth-watering pulled pork sandwiches from the Maximus/Minimus truck in Seattle, are becoming just as sought after as their crispy cousin.
  • HAND-PREPARED DISHES are also on the up, whether it be fresh-cut fries, made-to-order salads or the classic techniques of pickling and preserving. We like our food with a lot of hard work and love behind it.
  • Locovores rejoice! LOCALLY SOURCED AND GROWN, farm-to-table food has become very appealing. And this isn’t just a trend for produce, but seafood, meat and more—people want to be more in tune with what they’re putting in their bellies.
  • Score one for the more sensitive eaters: GLUTEN-FREE AND FOOD-ALLERGY CONSCIOUS FOOD are becoming way more popular and widely available. Chicago’s Vinci has gone so far as to offer an entire gluten-free menu. This has to be my favorite, hands down!

Have you noticed any other food and restaurant trends on the rise? What are some of your favorites?
